Better Packaging…..a compostable, sustainable alternative.

Rebecca Percasky and Kate Bezar

Rebecca Percasky and Kate Bezar are two individuals who challenge the status quo and are passionate about the environment. They see this current climate crisis we are in as an opportunity to change the way they live for the better.

While working in the eCommerce industry for years they became horrified by the amount of additional single use plastic waste that was being created and felt there must be a better way. The Better Packaging Co was created from this desire to challenge the way that things had always been done and improve them.   The Better Packaging team have a vision, and that is to replace every single plastic bag with one of their certified, home-compostable bags and ensure that they are composted. It was paramount that their products be accessible and affordable to brands of all sizes.

The world has woken up to a plastic hangover. Globally governments and councils, carried along by the rising tide of public opinion, are moving to ban single-use plastic items such as straws, polystyrene cups, cotton buds … and supermarket carry bags. We’ve got a long way to go, and in some instances, it’s not possible to BYO bag and purchasing online is one such situation. Until now, fit-for-purpose alternatives have not existed. After many months of research, design and testing we have developed a range of certified home-compostable courier satchels, poly bags, bubble bags, labels and ziplock bags. Our products will break down in a home compost after 90 days compared to plastic alternatives which last 100’s if not 1000’s of years. AND, our products are still as tough, durable and waterproof as their plastic counterparts meaning merchants can change to Better Packaging without changing any of their (fulfilment) processes.

Better Packaging is a revolutionary, customised packaging solution for the new eco-economy – a circular economy in which generating waste is not an option.

Some of the products they create that are alternatives to traditional plastic are:

  • Courier bags / ‘Jiffy’ mailers / Courier satchels
  • Padded / Bubble Mailers
  • Bubble wrap
  • Poly bags

TYPES OF PACKAGING

ComPOST Range is partly made from plant material such as corn husks, rice straw and wheat straw with a binding agent/resin for flexibility and are 100% biodegradable and compostable.

OPACKS range are made from natural waste products and recycled materials such as limestone off-cuts from the building industry that were headed for landfill.  They are rescued and processed in a revolutionary way that has taken many years to perfect, into packaging.  This process uses only renewable solar power, zero water, acid or bleaches, while creating zero pollution and greenhouse emissions.

SWOP packaging range is the most sustainable and are currently being trialled.  This will be the ultimate packaging solution for the future – sturdy packaging that can be used and reused again and again.  Customers will be incentivised to use a ‘reply paid service’ to send the SWOP back to base for refurbishment and redistribution. Incentives will include a discount for purchasing again at their favourite store, a donation towards ocean plastic clean-ups and the chance to win eco-prizes.

“We have had a phenomenal response to our products. Our growth has been virtually organic, viral in fact. We launched our first product in July of last year and the first 2 orders sold out within 2 weeks since then we have sold over 2.5 millions bags into 42 countries and now have warehousing in China, USA, NZ, UK and Aus. It’s exciting because it means that people really want change.” – Rebecca & Kate, Founders of Better Packaging company.

Better Packaging team headquarters are in New Zealand, and they are an Australian Ltd company entity as well as a NZ Ltd company too. They have warehousing and distribution in both countries as well as the USA.
