Youth On Strike!……3-part series on YouTube

The Paris Agreement has gained a powerful new spokesperson: tens of thousands of young people from all over the world. A whole new generation has understood the Agreement’s significance and the urgent need to act on climate to protect our future. I suspect the clarion call of the school strikes for climate, in support of the science and keeping warming to below 1.5ºC, is beginning to resonate in board rooms and across negotiating tables everywhere. Keeping the pressure up this year, and next, is going to be tremendously important. Leaders will need constant reminding that there is broad support for the necessary transformational changes that will shift our economy onto the decarbonisation track laid out in Paris. 2020 is the first test of that track. It’s the moment when governments agreed to come back to the table with new, better, emission reduction plans. The school strikes have become a key piece of the puzzle in holding governments accountable and reminding them that decarbonizing and modernizing the economy is actually in their interest.

In March 2019 Australian students, inspired by Greta Thunberg’s call to action,  defied calls to stay in school and went on strike for climate change action.  The story of young people striking for climate change, as told by students themselves, is a new, innovative 3-part documentary series on Junkee’s YouTube channel.

Youth On Strike! Is a bunch of students vlogging their story, asking to be taken seriously even though they are not yet voting age, they can clearly see the urgent need to participate in Australia’s democracy and have their say about the future – despite being told to stay out of it by the government and community leaders who said, kids ‘shouldn’t worry about these things and should simply go to school’.

Youth On Strike! Put the storytelling tools in the student’s hands and their vlogs provide valuable insight into what it takes to be a part of this movement, showing how students balance school-life, activism, their struggle to keep the movement youth-led, and how they keep their climate protests moderate and gathering momentum – navigating extremism.

This generation is amazing and climate change is the story that defines them. They are a connected global community, articulate and educated about the science of climate change. Some older Australians find their dedication and focus hard to comprehend and the fact that they are committed to keep this movement going to bring about lasting change.
